Instructor: David Wood
Date: Saturday, May 18
Time: 10am - 4pm
Location: Standard Parts Studios
928 E 12th St, Oakland, CA 94606
Workshop Description: Looking to learn some basic woodworking and hand tool techniques? Come learn how to turn a freshly cut piece of “green” wood into a functional and beautiful object for everyday use!
Instructor David Wood will lead students in the safe and effective use of the “slöjd” and hook knives for carving wooden cooking utensils. The first portion of the workshop focuses on design considerations, both aesthetic and practical, as well as learning about the physical properties of wood that impact the durability and ease of carving. Participants will then be guided in best practices for carving the utensil of their design, including a variety of knife grips. Participants begin with a prepared blank and will have the opportunity to see how the blanks are created from a section of tree, using a hatchet and/or wedges.
This is a great introductory class if you’ve been curious about the world of wood carving, and also a great opportunity for those with experience to hone their skills. All skill levels and experience are welcomed. David will have you seeing potential spoons in tree branches everywhere you go!
