Workshop Description: Spring in the Bay Area is exuberant! Although there are a wide range of plants that can be used as dye material year round, spring offers a feast of color. This class is a great way to tune into the flora of our region, to slow down and notice what’s in bloom, and to spend some time getting to know plants and their special pigmented properties, and perhaps even get inspired to start your own dye garden! Come learn about some of our favorite spring blooming plants and the array of colors they produce. You’ll learn the ins and outs of processing dye materials, selecting fabrics, how to treat fabric for dye absorption using mordants, calculating proper weights and proportions, and of course, dying the fabric! You’ll leave with a variety of organized dye samples, a bandana dyed with your favorite color, as well as recipes so you can easily reference and replicate these practices on your own. This is a great introductory class as well as a way for a practiced dyer to deepen knowledge of dye plants that grow in the Bay Area. All skill levels welcomed.
