Workshop Description: Have you ever wanted to learn how to weave a basket? This one-day workshop offers a great opportunity to learn the basic elements of a plain weave basket with a square base and circular rim. Students will select an accent color from a provided range of naturally dyed rattan reed in order to integrate visual pattern and color work into their basket walls.
The first portion of the day will be dedicated to acquainting students with the material and weaving process. We will discuss basic weaving terminology and materials, tools and how best to use them, visual and structural patterning, as well as shaping techniques so that students will have a sense of how to translate some of these basic skills onto other basket forms. We will then get to work building the base of our baskets: turning up the walls, shaping our vessels, and turning down the perimeter edges once they have reached their desired height. Finishing the rim of a basket offers an opportunity to add both structural integrity and visual interest to the final piece. Students will prepare a perimeter of flat-oval reed, apply a sea-grass accent, and utilize a whip stitch lashing technique to tie the whole thing together.
Students will leave with a finished basket suitable for storing linens or other household items of your choosing. This course is designed for beginners and intermediate students alike.
