Workshop Description: The use of Coptic style book binding dates to as early as the 2nd Century CE, named for the Coptic christians in Ancient Egypt. The binding consists of visible chain stitched rows that run perpendicularly across folded pages along the spine of the book. It is a sturdy, versatile, and beautiful style of binding that can easily accommodate any number of pages. It is no surprise that this ancient book binding form is widely used by book artists and makers today.

In this workshop, participants will learn the steps of creating a Coptic bound book from start to finish including creating customized book covers from book board, learning about paper choices, measuring, cutting, folding, and, of course, binding a book. Once you’ve learned the basics, you can transform any collection of paper (or other materials!) into a book, functional or sculptural.
